In class for the remaining four class periods this year you will be given time to review to course content we've studied this year. The Final Exam will be on Monday, June 14th, in the morning.

What you should do to aid the review:

Use your class time effectively to work with peers and ask questions.
FOR NEXT CLASS: Collect your old tests, skill quizzes, and chapter packets so you may refer to them efficiently.
As you review, make sure you are doing enough thinking on your own (as opposed to group problem solving) - you'll be taking the final on your own.

The final exam is an opportunity to demonstrate how well you have mastered and retained the major concepts of this course. The Precalculus teachers believe that long-term understanding is especially worthy of reward, so the final exam will be weighted more heavily for students who are able to over-perform their semester grades. For example, a student who has a B average for the semesters but gets an B+ or higher on the final exam will have their final count as 20% of their year grade. If the same student earns a B- or lower it will count as 10% of their year grade.

After the break, you can drop by and show me a fully functioning polynomial grapher. A good grapher would include

dynamic changes based on different zeroes.
an (i.e. updates when roots are changed) "a" calculator.
a y-intercept calculator.
a graph that always includes the zeros and enough other points to see the behavior of the polynomial.
the coefficients of the expanded polynomial.
a generally neat, well-organized, and pleasant looking spreadsheet.

You can work on this a bit after break. I hope you don't do any math over break unless you get really bored!

Here is your first assignment: Send me an email about yourself that will help me get to know you as a person and as a math student. It should have two parts:

1. Your personal autobiography. Write about yourself and your interests. Describe a few of your activities and hobbies, talents and passions, values and commitments. What are the important things that you want me to know about you?

2. Your mathematical autobiography. Describe yourself as a math student in the past and in the present. What have been your best and worst experiences related to math? What kinds of math class activities are good or bad for you? When has learning math been easy, and when has it been hard? What do you like about math itself? And finally, what are your goals for this math class?

Please write honestly and informally. This assignment is my first chance to learn about many of you, so it’s important to just be yourself. I will not be grading your writing or judging your opinions in any way. If you'd prefer, feel free to write your autobiographies in Word and just attach them to the email message. Please send this to me in the next couple of days.

Our Chapter 1 test will be next Wednesday 10/15. It will cover all of chapter 1, but with special emphasis on the material covered since the last test (1.7-1.10). In preparation, I suggest a couple things:

Make sure you can do every single exercise from our course documents.
Correct your test to make sure you have mastered the material from 1.0 to 1.6. Do your official corrections with me if you have time.
Drop by or send me an email if you have any questions. You have lots of time to master this material, review sooner rather than later.

Please finish 1.9 (5,6) and 1.10 (all). To make sure you are on the right path, here is a summary of the figures your groups should have gotten in exercise 1: a (hyper), b (degenerate w/line y = -x), c (hyperbola), d (ellipse), e (hyperbola), f (ellipse), g (ellipse), h (hyperbola).

Don't forget to think about eccentricity again, especially for 1.9 (5,6). Danny said that e = c/a, where "c" is the distance from center to a focus and "a" is half the major axis length. To figure out why this is true, you might want to look at your graph for 1.9 #2 - I think this is clearer than using your sketchpad sketch.

Good luck studying! Here are a couple of suggestions:

Make yourself a study guide consisting of the major ideas from each unit.
Make sure you have successfully understood each problem. Just writing down someone else's ideas without really making sense of it yourself is not successful understanding.
Talk with your peers or meet with me about your questions as soon as possible. The closer to the exam you learn something, the more likely you are to forget it under pressure.

I wrote up solutions to the two really long algebraic problems in 1.5: 1.5 #4 and 5b. They are on my desk in A/G core.

The homework is to finish section 1.5. Some notes on the problems:

3 – Replace question 3 with the following: Given the diagram on the previous page, explain why the relationship 2a=|PF1-PF2| is true. The original wording is confusing.
4a – You are plugging x’s, y’s and c’s into the distance formula, then plugging this into the hyperbola equation |PF1-PF2| = 2a and then simplifying. The algebra part of simplifying closely follows the procedure you used in problem 1. I suggest you use a separate sheet of paper.
4b – Stare at the picture on the previous page until you see why the expression a^2 + b^2 = c^2 is true.

A Reference Text

There have been several requests for a reference to a text that could be used to supplement the material we are covering in class. This is the text we have used in the past:

Precalculus – Mathematics for Calculus 4^th edition, Stewart, Redlin and Watson

It is a big blue book. The Upper School library has 4 copies on reserve, the study center has 4 copies, and it is being used in Intensive Precalculus, Precalculus Fundamentals, and Intensive Algebra 2, so many of your classmates have copies. Ellipses and Hyperbolas can be found in sections 9.2 to 9.4.

I encourage you to use this book as a supplement to the class. However, recall that two of the main goals of this course are to (a) learn math content and (b) become more sophisticated thinkers and problem solvers. The only way to become a more sophisticated thinker is to struggle through concepts you don’t understand and try many things that do not work. This is frustrating at first. If you get in the habit of looking up answers in Stewart before making a meaningful attempt to solve it on your own, then both your problem solving ability and your depth of understanding of these topics will suffer. In other words, be sure to use the book as a resource and not a crutch.

Please finish these exercises from section 1.3 (1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8). On number 7, you are asked to use a result obtained from number 5. The answer to number 5 is: 16x^2+25y^2=400. Use this result to complete number 7.

Update: #6 will be the only presentation problem for Monday.

On Monday we will have a catch-up and summary day. We'll also finish the remaining exercises from 1.3.

I've gotten a few questions already - here are a few hints: the standard form for a circle was given in section 1.0 #6; On 1.1 #3, remember that a tangent to a circle would be perpendicular to the radius of the circle at the point of intersection - in other words: think negative reciprocal slope.
